The largest collection of Oscar statuettes ever offered for public sale has been auctioned off for more than $3 million, a Brentwood auctioneer said Wednesday.


The 15 golden figures were sold to three individuals in a sale conducted online, said auctioneer Nate D. Sanders. The auctioneer would not disclose the identities of the bidders.


Thirteen of the statues were purchased by just one buyer.

Highlights of the exquisite collection estimated to sell for more than $1 million include Herman Mankiewicz’s 1941 Best Screenplay Academy Award for Citizen Kane, the 1933 Best Picture Oscar awarded to Cavalcade, groundbreaking cinematographer Gregg Toland‘s 1939 Oscar for Black & White Cinematography in Wuthering Heights, Charles Coburn’s 1943 Best Supporting Actor Oscar for The More the Merrier- the first year that Best Supporting Actors were awarded statutes - and the first Oscar awarded for Special Effects to Farciot Edouart in 1938.

The Academy Award for the original screenplay of "Citizen Kane" auctioned for more than $861,000.

The Academy Award statuette that Orson Welles won for the original screenplay of "Citizen Kane" was auctioned for more than $861,000 in Los Angeles.

The 1942 Oscar was thought to be lost for decades. It surfaced in 1994 when cinematographer Gary Graver tried to sell it. The sale was stopped by Beatrice Welles, Orson's youngest daughter and sole heir.

Magician David Copperfield was among those clamoring for the golden trophy, but he was the runner-up bidder for the Oscar, which sold to an undisclosed buyer for $861,542, Los Angeles auctioneer Nate D Sanders said.

The slightly tarnished Oscar for 1941 best screenplay is one of just a handful of illustrious Academy Award statues to sell for near the million-dollar mark.

Debbie Reynolds' Memorabilia Auction A huge Success

In 1970, movie legend Debbie Reynolds began to collect the costumes that defined Hollywood. She went to the MGM auction and bought everything she could. She held one of the biggest personal movie memorabilia collections in the world.

The world record for a dress being sold was $1.4 million, and that was one of Marilyn Monroe's dresses in 1999.

On Saturday night, the most famous dress in history, Marilyn's white dress from the film "The Seven Year Itch," sold for $4.6 million. Reynolds said she bought the dress for only $200.

The Wizard of Oz, Ruby slippers from the film "The Wizard of Oz," sold for $510,000, and the Dorothy Dress worn by Judy Garland sold for $910,000.

At the auction, there was an additional 20 percent buyers' 1 premium, tax and fees added onto all items. Which brought totals, such as Monroe's dress, to more than $5 million.

Elizabeth Taylor's letters from 1949 to be auctioned off

More than 60 love letters that screen legend Elizabeth Taylor (1932-2011) wrote in 1949 to a young Miami Beach millionaire that she was deeply in love with, will be auctioned online next week.

The love letters are ones that Taylor wrote at the age of 17 to 28-years-old William Pawley, the son of millionaire William Pawley Sr., in whose luxury Miami Beach home she and her mother stayed one year while on vacation.

The 66 letters from Taylor and another 20 from her mother will be auctioned between May 12-19 by RR Auction, which obtained the collection from Pawley two years ago and expects that they will fetch a sales price of some $30,000, or perhaps even more.

Elizabeth Taylors Jewelry to be Auctioned Next Month

Elizabeth's jewellery collection is due to be auctioned off next month with the proceeds going to The American Foundation for Aids Research and the Elizabeth Taylor Aids Foundation.  The collection is valued at more than $150 million. 

The collection features colored stones such as suites of rubies, rare pearls and diamonds as famous as the actress herself, interest in any Taylor auction is expected to be great. Interest will surely pique if the sell-off includes pieces such as the Krupp diamond, gifted by her fourth and fifth husband, the late actor Richard Burton.

Kevin Smith to Auction Props - Memorabilia

Kevin Smith plans to hold an auction next month at the Pasadena Convention Center with the proceeds going tol help Smith with the distribution of his new movie, "Red State."

Some of the high profile items to be auctioned are Bluntman costume from "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back" and Bartleby's angel wings, and torso armor from "Dogma."

Zsa Zsa Gabor’s Rolls Auction

In 1989, actress Zsa Zsa Gabor was cruising around Beverly Hills in her Rolls Royce when a motorcycle cop stopped her.  A chase ensued, followed by a slap, after which the much-married Hungarian bombshell enjoyed the hospitality of the Beverly Hills Jail. Florida’s DC Foeller will offer the 1979 Rolls Corniche, still registered to Zsa Zsa, at its classic car auction on March 19-20. It comes with her mug shot.
With just 48,000 miles, the car also has its original pink slip, and comes with a variety of photographs featuring Zsa Zsa in the car.

Marilyn Monroe's Last Photo Shoot on the Block

Weeks before her death in 1962, Marilyn Monroe posed for photographer Bert Stern, who produced over 2,500 images. Despite the wealth of that material, only one printed copy of this contact sheet exists. There are nine images on it, one of them marked with an “X” indicating Monroe’s negative opinion of the shot. Carrying an estimate of $14,000-$18,000, the sheet will come to auction later this week at Swann Galleries.
Also highlighted in the sale are albums by 19^th century photographer Linnaeus Tripe (est. $35,000-$45,000) and Adam Clark Vroman (1856-1916) (est. $30,000-$40,000), as well as photographs by Ansel Adams, Edward Clark Weston, and Edward Curtis.

Spock's ear to be auctioned

Star Trek fans will have the opportunity to own on a piece of sci-fi history as a prosthetic ear worn by Leonard Nimoy who played Spock goes up for auction.

The iconic memento has been carefully preserved for more than 30 years and is now set to be sold off at an auction of Hollywood memorabilia next month.  Dan Levin, a spokesman for Premier Props, the company behind the sale, says, "This ear was kept by the prop master from the film. It was carefully wrapped up which is important because silicone latex can deteriorate. "Spock's ears are an iconic part of 'Star Trek' and fans across the world would love to own it. We've already had lots of bids."

The auction will take place in Los Angeles April 2.

Michael Jackson Handwritten Lyrics sell for $78,000

Two pages of partial lyrics to the song "Beat It" handwritten by Michael Jackson. Document begins "Beat It by Michael Jackson" and includes the first two verses along with the refrain. Housed in a frame with the album it appeared on, Thriller. "Beat It," released on Valentine's Day in 1983, shared a top five position on the Billboard Hot 100 with another single from Thriller, "Billie Jean." Within only a few months the single was awarded a gold record award.  The pre auction estimate was $4,000 to 6,000.  The winning bid was $78,000.
